all the men socialized outside sitting on the bleachers talking. Also the old man socialized with the customer.
2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
It was wierd and showed how people socialize and dont socialize. the end was horrible.
3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
it teaches some a leason and it makes some think about whats important to them in their lives. It has a depressing but strong impact influence on people. they socialize to other prisoners inside prison but when they get out their somewhat anti-social and keep to themselves.
4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
Keep them able to socialize under watch and only for a little bit of time. i think the people in charge have responsibility but we individuals who have nothing to do with them dont.Being rehabilitated is all up to the individual themselves.

  2. 1. One example of socialization is when one of the men tries to calm another to keep him from stabbing a man in the neck. Another is when the men make up a reason for the man to stop. It was a quick reaction which i think has to do with socialization.

2.I thought it was meaningful and sad.

3.I think it teaches them about the bad parts of society that many people try to cover up so that America looks perfect when in reality it has flaws just like any other place.

4.I think they teach the prisoners how to be better people. Then they allow visiting hours so they can see how their progressive changes effect those that they love the most. I think we do depending on the crime commited. Most of the time you can convince a person to better their ways. But not always.

  3. 1.)
2.) It was cool. I've seen the movie before.
3.) Well, in some cases I don't think it has any influence, but if you've spent 50 years in the same prison doing the same things, it becomes the only thing you know. its your life. and then when the just up and drop you into this new world, where you dont' know whats going on or how to act because its like flying 50 years in the future, you don't know what to do with yourself.
4.)I'm sure it would take alot of time. or torture. like in A Clockwork Orange, the put this dude through SO much and they physically changed his attitude and view on life. I dont' think it would be that easy to desocialize someone. or fast. so i don't think its possible. and no, its not our responsibility to make sure that prisoners are rehabilitated. one, because I'm sure that would cost more money, two, how can you tell, and three, in my opinion there really is no way that you as yourself can change someone else. they need to realize on their own that the life they're leading is wrong, and if they don't they'll just end up in jail again. so...maybe. maybe we should make sure. maybe we don't want them back in jail. I dont' know. I don't know the whole "taxpayers dollars" thing.

When all the guys were outside sitting on the bench talking , and inside the store when they were talking to each other.

2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
I thought it was sad because of the ending. But it teaches you about prison life & what not.

3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
I think it depends on the person, to some individuals, prison becomes their home & they adapt to always being there. To others, it may scare them and make them realize what they did was wrong.

4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
I think they shouldn't be allowed to talk to people for awhile, and then let them soccialize with others again, but keep them under watch, and No I really don't think its our responsibilty to make sure they are, I think it's the people who work at the prison.

  5. 1. ) The part where the guys are talking about how important that one guy is, though when he leaves he is nothing. Also the guy gets used to having a crow that he takes care of.

2.) My reaction to this clip is that its really sad how true it really is for someone to be living in a place for so long they become accustomed to it and when they leave they will do anything to get back.

3.) I think that the influence of prison is different for different people, because some take the place in as if its another home, while others would do anything just to leave.

4.) By counsiling the prisoners that have been in prison for a long time, it would be better if we could at least counsil them, and and make sure they resocialize. Some of us do have a responsibility as a society because we can all help others by doin just the littlest things to help them resocialize.

  6. 1.)one was when they were trying to calm the old man down when he was trying to kill the other man and another was when the manager was talking to the old man telling him to double bag the groceries.
2.)the ending was horrible, its sad that he felt like the prison was his home and that he had no other way out. it shows how isolation and desocialization can really mess a person up
3.)it made the way they think and do and know things completely different, it shows that if you dont have that common human contact and are isolated from the real world or anything really that it is unreal.
4.)i think the worst form fo punishment is isolation so for the criminals who kill they should have no rehabilitation, but for the minor crimes, they should be taken out of the prison more often and do things around the community with supervision.

    1. one example is when they are trying to keep the old man from killing the other guy. another is when they are talking about the old man while sitting on the bleechers.
    2. i thought it was crazy. i didnt expect him to commit suicide.
    3. long term imprisonment changes the way people socialize and identify things.
    4. if it is possible i believe that u would have to slowly let the prisoner back into society. Now just all at once, because prison and the "real world" are different

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1. ) Name at least 2 examples of socialization. Explain the scene.
The first scene when the man were talking on the bleachers shows how society talks about others behind there back
In the Second scene when the man is at the store , the lady getting on op him doesnt know of the suffering he is in and this shows socolization becasue of how most of sciety doesnt think of others.

2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
I thought it was sad but hard to follow

3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals? It had a feel of importance on the old man because in the real world outside the prision , he shows not being able to function

4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain
In a way yes based on what the crime was to caused someone to be in jail, if it ended up killing someone they deserve isollation and tourcharde but if it was bsomething like stealing to feed themslef or someone else rehanibiate them to make them learn to work for what they wnat in a respectiful way.

i guess when the men are all talking together and i think the whole realationship with the menbers of the jail would be socialization
2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
it really opened my eyes because you dont think about people wanting to stay in jail very often but when thats all you know it becomes like your home.
3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
i think it hurts the ones who have grown up in it because its all they kno. its hard for them to enter back into society
4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
i think we should because its hard for them to find jobs or places to stay but today we just dont take the time to make sure they do get rehabilitated

    2. the ending was sad, its bad that the only place he could call home and felt like he was home at was prison.
    3. when your in prison a long time its your home and the people in it are your friends so when you leave it then you have no home or friends
    4. no i don't think as a society we have a resonsibility to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated, they are in prison for a reason, depending on the severity of the crime the people who commit what society considers small crimes could be rehabilitated, but the people who commit crimes that society see's as the worst crime then no they should serve there punishment

  11. 1. ) a. The prisoners are trying to convince the guy not to kill the other guy. He is being influenced.
    b. This movie shows how the man doesn't know how to survive in society because for 50 years he was in prison taken from society. He is so accustomed to prison he commits suicide.

2.) What is your reaction to the clip? My reaction is that i'm shocked. He wanted to go back to prison. Because prison life is all he knows, our society, the norm, seems strange to him.

3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals? Prison to some people is all they know, as the man says it, it is a home. But in our society its not the norm, somewhere we don't want to go.

4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
i don't think its necessarily our responsibility because prison is a punishment. They made the choice to go. Why should we waste our government founds to help them? But than again i think loans should be given to those who have no way to support themselves.

+All the men socialized outside sitting on the bleachers talking. Also the old man in the library with the crow/bird?

2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
+It was odd at first, but shows how people socialize and the effects of not being socialized. Seeing the old man walking around in the city, and not being used to it made me sad. And then I saw the ending, and it was really horrible. :(

3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
+It definitely has an impact on all, but maybe not the same kind of impact. It teaches some a leason and it makes some think about what is important to them. The idea of prison is depressing. When the prisoners are in prison, they socialize to other prisoners inside prison but when they get out they're anti-social.

4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
+I think we as a society have the responsibility to help resocialize them if they choose to be.

    b) the other prisoners telling him to let the guy go.

2.) it's really sad i never realized how being in jail for so long can make people.

3.) they cant conform to society anymore, like in the clip he didnt feel safe, and he didnt know about automobiles which were everywere by the time he got let out.

4.) yes, if they have been isolated for so long, they can't just be thrown back into society. as a society we should help them slowly cooperate with others.

  14. The two forms of socialization i saw in the clip was the old man who was about tot cut the other guys throat, was scared because he was about to be released from prison and didn't know how to adapt to non-prison life. Therefore he kills himself which is the second socialization example.
2.) What is your reaction to the clip? it was really sad, that someone was so frightened of leaving jail that he took his own life. i never thought of being in prison could break a persons sense of self and adaptability.
3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals? it completely isolates them from loving human contact, and without that a human cant survive.
4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? I'm cross on this subject because if you are in prison you have commited a crime whether it be minor or major. i believe everything in life has a purpose and meaning. i think you have to break someone of their bad habit and teach them the right way to deal and adapt to new life.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1. ) one example is the severe isolation he deals with, after being realeased he doesn't know what to do because he has been in prison for 50 years. Another example is his depression after leaving the prison and being scared all the time.
2.) i thought the clip was really depressing. and i think it is sad that he was practically begging to go back to jail so he wouldn't be alone.
3.) i think prison makes people realize what life is all about. and it makes them go kinda stir crazy to an extent because once they get out they don't know what to do with themselves because they have been in jail so long.
4.) I think it would be the prison and the prinoner being released responsiblity becasue they should put forth the effort to become a benefical part of society.

    ReplyDelete
  16. after watching that clip I wasn't to shocked or suprised because i've heard similar stories before.
Prison has a huge influence on the prisoners, especially if they are in there for a really long time as with the old guy in the clip.
No I do not thnik it is our responsibility to rehabilitate prisoners so that they can be successful out of prison. they derserve to suffer since they already did somthing bad to have been sent to prison for so long in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1. ) Name at least 2 examples of socialization. Explain the scene.

One example of socialization is how Brooks had learned to adjust to the life of prison and he became comfortable with the life. He learned what was right and wrong in prison and made the best of it. He adjusted so well to it that he was able to get out of jail. The next example of socialization is how he had to adapt to the real world when he was released. He was so much younger when he was sent to prison that everything was different.

2.) What is your reaction to the clip?

(This is a really good movie.) The point of this clip is to show the impact prison has on people and it also shows how Brooks made the most of his life in prison until it was all he knew and all that he wanted. It was sad when he hung himself, but he felt that was the only way out because he was living in a world that wasn't made for him.

3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?

It has a tremendous influence on people. It gives people time to reflect on what they have done to get into prison. And it pretty much takes their previous lives away so they have to learn to live in a different community.

4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.

I believe that the prisoners should be the ones who have to go through resocialization and it should be their responsibility if they are truly guilty of the crime they committed. They deserve the punishment they receive for their crimes as well as the consequences they must face when they are released from prison.

  18. 1. The guys trying to convince the homeboy not to kill the dude. Lol. Then when the homeboy gets out of prison he doesn't know what to do, so he kills himself. Sad. :(
    2. Welllll I don't really love the foul language but I think this is a movie that has a good point.
    3. I've spent a few nights in the slammerrr you know.. only not really. I have no idea. I assume it's not very good. I would have a hard time not being able to do anything independantly and I would probably go crazy without any alone time. AKA NEGATIVE.
    4. The police department should require classes to help them with resocialization depending on the amount of time spent in prision. The police didn't do the crime so they don't owe criminals anything. Correct. BUT unless they wanna see these newly released people in a casket/back in prison they should help :)

    * I saw someone use the phrase "sledding" today on facebook. It made me saddddddddd :(

    a. The old man had been in prison for fifty years and he believes that he can not survive in the real world. He tried to cut one of his friend’s neck so that he could be put back into the prison.
    b. The old man was raised in a world where it was rare to see a car and then spent fifty years away from that world. When he got back into life, it was too much for him. He thought the world had gotten to fast paced. The life that he was leading depressed him and caused him to commit suicide.
    2) I have seen this movie before and I really liked it. It kind of forces you to see the side of a criminal’s like. Guilty or innocent, they are still imprisoned and have to endure the hardships of jail life. Many musicians today like to brag about their jail time, they believe it is like a badge of honor. Maybe if they had to live in a prison that wasn’t bound by law to treat them decently, they would not be so proud.
    3) I believe that prison can harm a person’s ego so much to the point that they loss their own identity. This can cause a person to adapt to the nearest personality. This is called desocialization, and resolcialization.
    4) If we desocialize the prisoner and then introduce them to a proper citizen in group therapy then they will adapt that personality.

so he tries to hurt his friend to go back to jail.
2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
its kinda sad becuase i want to help the guy but i can't... its just a movie though
3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
it can mentally impact you greatly(obviously) especially isolation.
4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
therapy/ i don't think so. if they didn't want to go through what they are going through, then they shouldn't have done what they did.

    2) You know at first i really didnt feel bad but then as the clip went on i felt realy bad for him i mean he had no body. It was like he was ripped away from the only thing he had ever known and now he doesnt know what to do.
3)I think prison has a bad effect on individuals i mean when you stay away from society so long you loose a sense of what its like. SO i think it is very bad.
    4) I dont know how we would resocialize them. But i mean i think we can try to help them so the dont commit another crime so they can go back to prison.

a)Brook's jailmates convincing him that cutting his friends throat wasn't what he really wanted.
    b) The way Brooks perceived and reacted to the outside world after being released.
2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
I'm a little upset that the old dude went with hanging himself, I figured robbing a store to be placed back in the "home" he knew best would of been sufficent enough.
3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
I think it has a positive and negative influence depending on the individual. For some it's better than the life they had outside of jail while for others the containment physically and mentally drives them crazy.
4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
I don't really have any ideas as to how prisoners would be "desocialized" and "resocialized" but I do think as a society we should help them. I mean if we don't then we might as well except blame for whatever negative actions they make.

It made me sad when the old guy hung himself.
3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
The prison drives most people insane and and depressed.
4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
When people rehabilitate some one these days in a prison they don't make them feel good or give them any praise to get better. The people in prison drive thereselves insane and depressed.

  28. 1. The first example of socialization is when Brooks leaves the prison and must adjust to the outside world life, especially when he sends a letter to the "fellows" talking about the traffic, etc. Another example of socialization occurs when Brooks has to adjust to his employment, he must follow his directions and work hard. He isn't accustomed to the work.

    2. It is very sad to see that Brooks' return to the outside world cost him his life. It shows how isolationism, new surroundings, and adjustment can impact a person.

    3. After being in prison for a long time prison breaks you or desocializes you, taking you away from everything you once knew. It's part of the reason some criminals will do almost anything to end back up in prison; it becomes your life & own little world.

    4. We dont have a complete responsibilty to rehabilitate the prisoners; only partial. Nevertheless we should try to make the transition a little easier. If we dont take the time to resocialize them the rapid change in surroundings could have a negative impact on us because they're gonna harm us to get back to prison.

  29. 1. ) Name at least 2 examples of socialization. Explain the scene.
    - When the men were talking to the old man, trying to calm him down and to put the knife down.
    - When all of the men were on the bench talking to each other about the old man and how his behavior was actually acceptable in the place they were in.

2.) What is your reaction to the clip?
    - At first I was more shocked at the language than anything else, but it was saddening. That the old man thought that prison was better simply because that's what he was used to.

3.) What influence do you think prison has on individuals?
    - It changes them for sure. In there they have too much time to think about what they did, which usually has a negative effect on them. And while they change, the world changes (depending how much time they're in there).

4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
    - We don't have that responsibility, only partially. We should probably make the transition easier, but by the time they're behind bars we don't feel like doing much else. We're lazy and feel as though they should be degraded. There should be a resocialization, I think, so they won't go back into "the real world" worse than they were before.

  30. 1. When all the guys were outside sitting on the bench talking, and when they were all inside the store talking.
    2. It ended really sad :/
    3. I think it keeps them sheltered from the outside world. They dont experience the development of society and its something that is at a constant change. So if youre in prison for a long time you assume life will be the same when you get out and most of the time it wont be.
    4. This is something im kind of wishy washy about. A part of me says no because theyre in prison for their own actions, so why should we take the time to make sure that they can survive in the outside world. Most of me says yes though, because someone can be locked up for a long time for something minor. Also we dont want the people who went into prison for say, being a serial killer to come out and not be able to handle the chance and start the bad habits again.

2.) It brings me to tears every time because it reminds me of things and of death.. Terrible thing for someone to have to go through that especially an old person.
3.) They dont have to relie on money inside prison they get meals and a places to sleep. When you get out that all goes away you have to find a job, home, and not to mention try to fit into society.
4.) It's not our responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated because they did things and made there own actions. Why should we have to fix what they did. Now if it was something minor than thats another story.

3)When You Leave That "safe haen" that they have grown accustomed to for so long, where food, clothing, water,& shelter were provided they dont know what to do or how to fend for themselves.
4)I dont know if i can answer that question i think that is supposed to be the point of jail to rehabilitate prisoners and that if we are not supposed to be rehabilitating them, what is jail for? Most people would say its to teach them a lesson, but then isnt teaching a lesson rehabilitation?

    2. I thought the film was very sad and I felt bad for the old man.

    3. I think it can be a good or a bad influence because some people go to jail and get out then they do the same exact thing that they got to prison for. Then there are others that go to jail that find God and become really religious because that's really all they have.

    4. We could put them in a different environment and see what happens. But I don't think we have a responsibility to rehabilitate them.

    3. honstly, a negative influence. while they are in prison, they are shut out of the rest of the world to say the least, yes they had done something wrong to get in there but when they get out, many things can change and it can mak a person scared and unsure of things, which in the long run, can hurt the person very badly. like in this clip, the guy ends up hanging himself.

4.) If prisoners can be "rehabilitated" through desocialization and resocialization, how do we do this? Do we have a responsibility as a society to make sure prisoners are rehabilitated? Explain.
-To rehabilitate someone throught desocalization and resocialization then if just sounds like your brain washing them think how you want them to think. to force them to see how you want things seen.
we have some responsibility because we dont want them thinking that what they did is right because we dont want other people to be put in harms way, but also on the other hand its not our personal responsibility. That is what the gov. needs to work on. and the people who are payed to do that job.

  46. 1. the main example of socialization for me was when they were sitting on the bleachers talking, and the man said that inside the prison, brooks is somebody. but when he leaves, he'll be nobody, to anybody. another example was when he was bagging groceries, and he didn't know to double-bag because he'd been in prison for 50 years and alot had changed.
    2. i thought it was horrible... i love old people, and he seemed like he deserved a shot. being isolated for so long and then being thrown back into the world is like serving your prison sentence AGAIN.
    3. i think the influence goes both ways. they get the chance to see what others are like and hopefully realize that they shouldn't BE bad. it helps them recognize their bad ways. but in others, it can have a negative influence because the hostile environment might ecourage more hostility.
    4. to desocialize them would make them think that the world revolves around them. this is a big part of the rehabilitation process, because later, when we resocialize them say 50 years later to the new world, so many things will have changed, progressed, and died out. when they see all of the changes, they will realize that the world does NOT revolve around them, and that may play some role in helping them realize that other people's lives are worth some sort of value. when crimes are committed, they are committed against other people, their property, their loved ones, etc.

  54. 1) Socialization is portrayed in the ShawShank Redemption clip when the prisoner cannot readjust to life in the real world outside of prison. The prisonor tries commiting crimes to be readmitted, because he is dependent on the lifestyle he lives while serving time after 50 years.
    2) After watching the clip, I was really surprised by the response that the previous inmate had to the world; He was incapable of taking care of himself and living on his on. After relying on prison to provide for him and control his life, the prisoner didn't know how to survive without it.
    3) The influence of prison has the potential to socialize people differently. In my opinion, containment after an extended period of time creates a deficit in an individual's mental stability. Prisoners become limited of their actions therefore have no choice but to conform to their 'new' environment.
    4) I don't believe that as a society it's our responsibility to rehabilitate prisoners, I believe it's the prison's obligations. However, I believe that prisoners shouldn't be carelessly allowed to mentally go crazy after being resocialized. Criminals should learn humbleness, respect and itegrity while in prison, but they should also remain sociable beings that could survive and maintain themselves in the real world.

  68. 1) The old man's comfort in the prison and therefore his willingness to stab the other guy is an example of socialization. He has been there so long, he knows what it takes to stay and is accustomed to the ways of the prison.

Another example of socialization is seen in the old man's depression and thoughts after he gets out of prison. He thinks about how shooting someone will get him back "home" and eventually takes his life thinking he doesn't matter to the world anymore, ways that the prison got him to think.

    2) It is hard to watch, but something I have thought about a lot before. All the factors that go into a decision like in the clip are never thought of in normal circumstances. However, this is what the prison system does to people daily.

    3) I think prison can have a couple influences. In some ways, it can make people regretful and not want to repeat their offense. On the other hand, if they are better off in prison, it can influence them to repeat in order to go back to prison. It all depends on the person's situation before and after their sentence, and what happens in between.

    4) In order for a re socialization program to be successful, former inmates would have to be given more freedom after they get out. There are much less jobs offered and more restrictions on someone who is a convicted felon, and if these stay in place, there is no way for a plan to be successful.

We do have a responsibility to rehabilitate them, though. If we put people in prison and then let them out, they pose a bigger danger because after a sentence, most people would be better off in prison anyway. Therefore, they will commit an offense to be able to go back, and they will not think more into it, hurting others or destroying property. If they are properly rehabilitated and society allows them to enter back, then it may be possible to successfully rehabilitate even what are seen as the worst, most insane inmates.

2.) It's sad. But for the most part, I think it's very true. People don't know how to live 'normally' in society after being institutionalized for that long.
3.) A lot, of course. How could it not? If you go there, you're there 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. It's bound to have some sort of influence on you.
4.) I think we have some responsibility in their rehabilitation, yes. For one thing, they need more opportunities when they leave prison. Now granted, maybe the shouldn't be able to do certain things depending on what they were convicted of...like a rapist being a elementary school teacher but nonetheless they should get more then enough opportunities to rebuild their lives. And we as society can only do so much to help them. Most of it is up to them and their willingness to become apart of society again. Because maybe they'll have to start out bagging groceries at Food Lion for the next 8 years before they can move up. Nothing is going to be given to them right off the bat. So their attitude is a big part of it as well.

  73. 1) One example of socialization is shown as the old man leaves the prison and is on his way to the halfway house. While in prison he became accustomed to the norms of that particular society and when he came back into American society he is lost and doesn't know what to do. H doesn't know when to cross the road, and can't seem to understand why everyone is in such a hurry. This is caused by his desocialization while in prison and his resocialization to the prison lifestyle.
2)The mans suicide does not surprise me at all. Once you have become accustomed to a certain lifestyle for so long, it seems pointless to live in any other society. I do think he should have committed another crime rather than killing himself so that he could have gone back to prison. Suicide is a coward's way out.
    3) Prison can have a good impact on people or a bad one. Alot of the time, people who go through the system come out with a sense of hatred for the American Judicial system. So yes, in most cases prison has a negative impact on people.
4)What we have to do is punish people for what they have done. We need to sentence these people fairly, send them to prison where they have to literally sit and think about what they have done for a significant amount of time. Then, once their sentence is complete, bring them back into society and monitor their progression back into todays society. And no, it is not our responsibility to rehabilitate these people, it is their responsibility to progress back into society.
